Prism cameras: color-specific image processing
A prism camera is designed for high-precision color separation and is widely used in industrial inspection and scientific imaging. Thanks to integrated prism technology, this type of camera can spectrally separate light, enabling exceptional color recognition and image quality.
How does a prism camera work?
A prism camera uses a prism to separate incidental light into different wavelengths. As a result, a colour separation is achieved that is not possible using other cameras. The sensors in a prism camera only receive a single colour of light, that is subsequently processed as data.
Our prism cameras can be adjusted especially for particular wavelengths. This could be for near infra-red (NIR) and short wave infra-red (SWIR). These types of cameras are also suitable if accurate colour separation offers important information.
A prism camera is ideal for:
- Accurate color inspection of materials and products.
- Detecting subtle color variations that standard cameras cannot capture.
- Hyperspectral imaging, for example in medical or scientific applications.

Applications of prism cameras
Prism cameras are widely used in industries where high-precision color analysis is essential:
- Food industry – Monitoring color consistency and product quality. Learn more about product quality control in the food sector.
- Pharmaceutical industry – Inspecting medicine coatings and packaging.
- Electronics and semiconductors – Accurately detecting defects in circuit boards and components.
- Graphic industry – Color correction and print quality inspection.
Would you like to know if a prism camera is suitable for your application? Our engineers will be happy to help.
Why choose a prism camera?
A prism camera offers several advantages over standard RGB and multispectral cameras:
- Excellent color accuracy without interpolation.
- No color bleeding or overlap between spectral channels.
- High resolution and signal-to-noise ratio for sharp and detailed images.
- Reliable performance under variable lighting conditions.
This makes prism cameras highly suitable in sectors where precise color and material recognition are crucial.
Prism cameras as area scan and line scan
Our prism cameras are available in two variants:
- Area scan prism camera – Designed for stationary or slow-moving objects. Learn more about area scan cameras.
- Line scan prism camera – Ideal for inspecting fast-moving objects. Learn more about line scan cameras.
Which camera you need depends on the speed and accuracy required for your application.
Prism cameras: advice and support
Which model of prism camera best suits your needs, depends on the type of inspection, the required image quality and the physical conditions around the object and the camera. In our range you will find various models from the BlueVision brand. Prism cameras are available in both area scan and line scan models.
Our engineers have extensive knowledge of our products and experience with various combinations and applications. We can also organise a demo of various products and systems for you. With custom advice, we ensure that the prism camera delivers the required results. If, after purchase, you encounter issues in practice, our support department will find a suitable solution.
